Welcome to the 2024 Refuge Outdoor Festival Camp Out! This event centers and uplifts Black, Indigenous, People of Color in the outdoors (white allies are welcomed). Take refuge, and do as much or as little as you would like!

Introduction (5 mins) - Welcome participants and provide a brief overview of the workshop.

Overview of Camp Food Cooking Techniques (5 mins) Explain the different ways to cook camp food, and for the sake of this workshop zone into the beauty and benefits of camp food cooking on a campstove.

Explain gear needed (5 mins) - Learn what to bring to have a camp kitchen, most of which we will encourage to reuse from their kitchen at home. And then once, they know they enjoy camping, opt for a dedicated camp kitchen so that you can go camping on a whim.

Hands-on Practice (15 mins) - Get hands-on experience using camp kitchen gear (i.e. campstove, connecting the propane, igniting the stove, adjusting heat, etc.)

Hands-On Practice Cooking (20 mins) - Provide example recipes that are culturally inspired and adjustable for groups with various dietary preferences. And then, we’ll move into meal preparation and encourage and assist participants with group meal preparation.

Enjoy the Food (10 mins) - Enjoy delicious meal and QnA will likely come up while we’re enjoy the meal made.

Wrapping Up and Kitchen Clean Up (10 mins) - Recap what we covered in the workshop and also share tips on kitchen clean up, so folks can do the full cooking to clean up aspects of cooking outdoors.


By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained hands-on experience with cooking on a camp stove and inspiration for ways to spice up camp food cuisine. Whether you’re a minimalist with cooking or gourmet chef, this workshop promises to build your joy and confidence in cooking at camp!
